TEMPORARY RESTORATION |
·
A temporary is a filling or crown that
is placed until the final restoration is made and ready to be placed. |
·
It is imperative that the
delivery of your final restoration be scheduled no more than four
weeks
following your initial visit.
| |
·
It is normal for the gum around your
tooth to be a little sore when the anesthesia wears off.
·
Two tablets of Advil or Tylenol taken
immediately after the appointment will help decrease inflammation and
alleviate |
discomfort. This soreness
should disappear over time. Do your best to chew on the opposite side
until your next |
appointment. Chewing
sticky foods can sometimes dislodge the temporary. It is not
uncommon to have the following |
reactions or problems with
the temporary. |
·
IT FEELS ROUGH
·
The temporary will feel rough compared to your other teeth.
·
IT CAME OFF |
·
This is probably the most common problem. It is supposed to come off
easily and some foods will promote this. Stay |
away from sticky
foods or gum. It is important for it to be there, so call us so we can recement
it or you may put it back |
in with a denture adhesive
until you can get in. |
·
IT FEELS HIGH
·
Please call our office so that
we can arrange for you to come in for an adjustment. You can
bruise a tooth if it is too |
high. |
| |
·
IT’S NOT HOW I WANT THE FINAL
RESTORATION TO LOOK. |
·
Don’t worry, the final restoration will look much better. |
| |
·
IT IS SENSITIVE |
·
The temporary will not always fit as
well as the final restoration, so there may be some sensitivity
to hot and cold as |
well as chewing. If it
is too uncomfortable, please call. |
| |
·
We cannot emphasize
enough the importance of the temporary restoration. It prevents food
from gathering in the |
preparation, and
prevents the prepared tooth from shifting and moving. If the tooth
shifts, the final restoration may |
not fit properly.
It is very important to clean the gum area around your temporary well.
The liquid given to you today is |
“Chlorhexidine Gluconate” and will aid you in
maintaining the tissue around your temporary. Please use as
instructed. |
Any irritation caused by
inadequate cleaning will compromise your final placement. Use your
toothbrush to clean the |
temporary as you
normally do your other teeth. You will not be able to floss
around your temporary as you may |
dislodge it. |
·
If you have any questions
concerning the temporary, please feel free to call. Remember, it will
only be for
a short time
and it will all be worth
it when you get your beautiful final restoration.

·
Delicate
layer of cells that we must preserve. Do not use soap, scrub or “play
with” the tooth. Now that it is clean, try |
to place it
back in it’s home; the socket. If the tooth does not seem to fit,
check to make sure it is not going in |
backwards. |
·
Once in place, gently bite on a piece of gauze or a clean cloth-and
call us! Every 30 minutes the tooth is out the |
prognosis drops. If it is impossible to return the tooth to it’s
socket, place it in a cup of cold milk or place it in the |
victim’s mouth. If you swallow the tooth we can not help you, if you
aspirate (inhale the tooth into your lung) your |
problems have
just gotten worse. If the mouth seems unwise or unsafe, do not follow
that recommendation. We can do |
amazing things with the benefit of dental implants. |
